I’ll restrain from cracking one more ‘joined the flock’ pun and report this as is: Twitter has bought Posterous. The Posterous team will now be working at Twitter HQ doing – well, this is the part where you make wild guesses.
From all appearances, this seems to be a talent acquisition. Posterous has been successful in building a agile, accessible blogging platform that emphasizes Twitter’s ethos of simplicity and usability (despite the mixed response to Poseterous Spaces), and the Posterous team would be right at home in Twitter’s offices.
Here are the posts announcing the acquisition from Twitter and Posterous.
Dan Frommer seems to think that the Posterous team will in involved in building out Twitter’s photo/video sharing capabilities. He also quotes Hunter Walk that the Posterous team could be employed to work on Twitter brand pages.
And before you ask, no, there have been no updates on the acquisition price, though by all means, it should at least be in the mid to late 7 figures. Posterous had raised $10.1M in cash, most recently, a $5M Series B in September 2011. TechCrunch’s Kim-Mai Cutler presumes that this may be a Facebook-GoWalla like deal where founders find a soft place to land in the lap of an industry bigwig than hitting the deadpool. In which case, the acquisition price might be a pittance. Which is a shame, really, because the original Posterous was a mighty fine product that unfortunately couldn’t find its feet and fulfill its original promise.
Nonetheless, congratulations to Sachin and co. for finding a new place to work in – and a mighty fine place at that!
